Band News

Congratulations to the Grade 7 and Grade 8 Jazz Bands on their performance at the Brandon Jazz Festival. Mrs Berglund and Mr. Popiel would like to thank all students involved for their hard work in preparation for this special event. This event would not have been possible without the help from our volunteer chaperones. Your support is appreciated.
The Grade 7 Band will be performing at the Manitoba Band Association’s Level 1 Band Festival on Wednesday, April 30 at 11:40 a.m. The Festival is held at North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church (1315 Gateway Rd). Parents are welcome to attend. Information and permission slips will be sent home in the upcoming weeks.
Plans are under way for our annual Grade 8 band trip to the International Music Camp. This is a unique musical experience open to all Grade 8 band students in the division. This year’s event will take place from May 28-30. If there are any Grade 8 band students who would like to come but have not yet signed up, please see Mr. Popiel as soon as possible.

Choir News

Congratulations to Vocal Express on their wonderful performance at the Winnipeg Music Festival on March 7! Congrats also on earning a GOLD medal standing! At this festival, they sang challenging repertoire – “Exsultate Justi” and “The Water is Wide” - in two and three part harmony. The students had such great focus and remembered so many key elements that we had worked on. The adjudicator commented on their extremely musical phrasing, fantastic faces and energy, great attention to details, and wonderful vowel shaping. As a result of their performance, the students were invited to sing at the Winnipeg Music Festival Choral Excellence Concert, featuring the top choirs of this year’s festival! We enjoyed performing our selections again at this concert on March 19. The students were also awarded the Gertrude Lowery Memorial Trophy. This trophy is awarded for the most outstanding performance by a School Chorus, Grades 5 to 8. Way to go, singers! On March 21, the vocal jazz choir travelled to Brandon with the jazz bands for the Brandon Jazz Festival. The students sang “Breaking Up is Hard to Do”, “Fever”, and “Sway”. It was a real treat to sing on the Westman Auditorium stage and the adjudication was valuable. The audience enjoyed the selections (including choreography!) and gave the singers a standing ovation! The boys’ choir is preparing to sing as the guest choir at Sturgeon Heights’ Vocal Jazz Coffee house evening on Tuesday, April 22. With a successful festival season now over, we look forward to diving into some new repertoire and preparing for our final concert on Tuesday, May 27! Keep up the great work, singers!

Welcome to April

It never ceases to amaze us how quickly the school year goes by. It is hard to believe April is here. The school would like to thank all the families that came to our Student-Led Conferences in March. We had fantastic attendance and the feedback we have received has been very positive and much appreciated.

With the spring weather upon us we would like to send out a reminder to ensure the students dress according to the conditions. As a parent, I know that spring also brings evening soccer games, baseball games, football games and other outdoor pursuits. We ask that you continue to support your child’s academic growth by encouraging them to finish the year in a strong manner.

Upcoming this month at Golden Gate are badminton, outdoor track, ultimate, rugby, intramurals, drama practices, choral practices, band practices as well as our regular classroom activities. We continue to be a school that provides numerous opportunities to keep your children active and engaged during the school day and year.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school.
