Send This Instead

The “Send this Instead” app empowers kids giving them a voice when they are under pressure to send intimate images of themselves online.
Have you heard about this app?

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Child Sexual Exploitation Unit in Ontario, have launched a sexting alternative app for teens called Send This Instead.

They asked all the funny people they knew, “What would you say if someone asked you to send images you didn’t want to?” They then took their answers and made posters and developed the app. The posters are witty, sarcastic and meant to help get the point across – using humor as a strategy.

The app is available on Android and Apple devices.

Letter Home

September 10, 2014

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Over the last few days we have experienced significant delays with our afternoon buses.  This is due to: 1) construction sites throughout the St. James-Assiniboia area which has slowed down traffic considerably, 2) new bus drivers learning their routes, and 3) incoming student registrations and additions to bus rider lists and drop off spots.

The St. James-Assiniboia school division is taking these delays very seriously and has approved the addition of two more afternoon buses to the fleet, with the intent of alleviating traffic delays that are impacting our buses.  We expect that bus routes will be worked out shortly and new drivers will soon become more familiar with these routes.

Please know that the safety and well-being of our students is of the utmost importance to us and that we are working as quickly as possible to rectify the current situation and to return your children home in a timely manner.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern these delays have caused and thank you for your understanding.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call the school at (204) 837-5808.

Sincerely,

Mme J. Buckwold         Mr. S. Thomson        Ms. C. Banks

Welcome Back

Bonjour et bienvenue! Welcome back to École Golden Gate Middle School.

We are looking forward to spending another great year with all of our students! We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new grade six students and a welcome back to our grade 7 and 8 students. The older students are excited to get to know our grade six students and help them navigate in their new setting. We would also like to welcome new staff members, Ms. Banks, M. Molloy, Mme Smith, Mme BenAissa and Ms. Anderson. Welcome back to Mme Morneau who is returning from maternity leave.

The beginning of a new school year gives all students the chance to renew friendships and to make new friends within our multi-age homeroom setting. These homerooms allow older and younger students to mix so that each grade of students has contacts and friends across grade levels. Parents are reminded to contact the homeroom teacher advisor with any concerns and s/he will forward the concerns to the appropriate staff members.

The homeroom teacher is the parents’ link to all of us in the school. This will also save parents time as all siblings have the same homeroom teacher. If you wish to communicate with a teacher, please feel free to email him/her or leave a message with one of our administrative assistants. We believe communication with parents is of the utmost importance and we encourage and welcome your questions. The Golden Gate staff is very enthusiastic and they are sure to make this year a fun and memorable one for our students. We encourage students to get involved in many activities offered at the school. École Golden Gate Middle School offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities thanks to our amazing and committed staff. We are entering our second year of the divisional iPad initiative.

To date we have seen a great deal of engagement in our classrooms through digital learning. We will be sure to inform you and provide you with all pertinent policies and agreements as well as the date and process for the iPad distribution during the month of September. We look forward to another great year!

News from the Choir

With the winter weather sticking around for so long, it feels as though May has really snuck up on us!

Congratulations to “The Golden Boys” who sang at the Sturgeon Heights’ Vocal Jazz Coffee House on April 22! The boys enjoyed singing some oldies by the Beatles and the Beach Boys! All three Golden Gate choirs have been enjoying learning some new repertoire after the music festival season. They are gearing up for the final concert of the year, on Tuesday, May 27 at 7 PM, in the Sturgeon Heights Theatre. This is the sixth year that we are having a concert devoted solely to our choirs, and it’s a great opportunity for them to perform a lot of their repertoire! Please mark your calendars and be sure to come on out!

Students can look forward to a field trip and wind up party at the beginning of June. Current Grade 6 and 7 students are reminded that there will be auditions for next year’s vocal jazz choir in early June as well. Please watch and listen for more information if you are interested, or speak to Ms. Armstrong!

Thank you for the time you have dedicated to our school. Without the assistance of parents and grandparents, we would be unable to offer field trips to Band Festival, Art Camp, Ski Trips and museums,
to name but a few. You make it all possible!

If you haven’t already done so, please drop by the office to sign your annual volunteer renewal form. This will ensure that your volunteer status remains current.

Thank you again from the staff and students of École Golden Gate Middle School.

News from the Band

Congratulations to Madeline S. who was selected to be a part of the 2014 Manitoba Provincial Junior Honour Band. The Honour Band is an annual event in our province. Members of the band are selected from students across the province through an audition process. In addition to performing a concert on May 10, the band will also perform with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on May 13.

Congratulations to the Grade 7 Concert Band for their recent performance at the Level 1 Band Festival. The students represented our school very well both on and off the stage. Thank you to those parents who assisted us with supervision and transporting our instruments.

The Grade 8 Swingin’ Gators Jazz Band performed at the Sturgeon Heights Big Band Dance on Saturday, April 26th. This has become an annual tradition for the band and, as always, was a great collaboration between the two music programs.

YOU’RE INVITED to our Spring Concert on Thursday, May 22nd at 7:00PM at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate. The concert will feature all of our band and jazz band groups. We hope to see you there!

Final preparations are being made for the annual Grade 8 divisional band trip to the International Music Camp located in the International Peace Gardens. This year’s camp takes place from May 28th – May 30th. We are very fortunate to have access to this world-class facility and this event has always been a memorable experience for our students. This event is open to all Grade 8 band students from our division. Students from all the middle schools are grouped into one of two bands. With the assistance of guest artists and conductors, each band prepares a number of songs for a performance held on the final evening.

Students interested in making some music this summer should consider attending the Manitoba Band Association’s Summer Band Camp from August 18 - 22 here at Golden Gate. This is a great opportunity for students to improve their playing skills with the help of guest artists in a fun, enthusiastic environment. Our band parent organization also supports this event by offering bursaries to offset the cost of the camp. Interested students should see Mr. Popiel or Mme Martin for an application as soon as possible.

Choir News

Congratulations to Vocal Express on their wonderful performance at the Winnipeg Music Festival on March 7! Congrats also on earning a GOLD medal standing! At this festival, they sang challenging repertoire – “Exsultate Justi” and “The Water is Wide” - in two and three part harmony. The students had such great focus and remembered so many key elements that we had worked on. The adjudicator commented on their extremely musical phrasing, fantastic faces and energy, great attention to details, and wonderful vowel shaping. As a result of their performance, the students were invited to sing at the Winnipeg Music Festival Choral Excellence Concert, featuring the top choirs of this year’s festival! We enjoyed performing our selections again at this concert on March 19. The students were also awarded the Gertrude Lowery Memorial Trophy. This trophy is awarded for the most outstanding performance by a School Chorus, Grades 5 to 8. Way to go, singers! On March 21, the vocal jazz choir travelled to Brandon with the jazz bands for the Brandon Jazz Festival. The students sang “Breaking Up is Hard to Do”, “Fever”, and “Sway”. It was a real treat to sing on the Westman Auditorium stage and the adjudication was valuable. The audience enjoyed the selections (including choreography!) and gave the singers a standing ovation! The boys’ choir is preparing to sing as the guest choir at Sturgeon Heights’ Vocal Jazz Coffee house evening on Tuesday, April 22. With a successful festival season now over, we look forward to diving into some new repertoire and preparing for our final concert on Tuesday, May 27! Keep up the great work, singers!

Welcome to April

It never ceases to amaze us how quickly the school year goes by. It is hard to believe April is here. The school would like to thank all the families that came to our Student-Led Conferences in March. We had fantastic attendance and the feedback we have received has been very positive and much appreciated.

With the spring weather upon us we would like to send out a reminder to ensure the students dress according to the conditions. As a parent, I know that spring also brings evening soccer games, baseball games, football games and other outdoor pursuits. We ask that you continue to support your child’s academic growth by encouraging them to finish the year in a strong manner.

Upcoming this month at Golden Gate are badminton, outdoor track, ultimate, rugby, intramurals, drama practices, choral practices, band practices as well as our regular classroom activities. We continue to be a school that provides numerous opportunities to keep your children active and engaged during the school day and year.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school.
